"The destiny of nations lies far more in the hands of women, the mothers, than in the possessors of power, or those of innovators who for the most part do not understand themselves. We must cultivate women, who are the educators of the human race, else the new generation cannot accomplish its task." ~ Friedrich Froebel

Do you ever get your feelings hurt when dealing with other people? I had this happen again recently, and while I know that it is quite silly, it still bothers me all the same and makes me hesitant to put myself or my work out there for people to criticize or decide upon.

A woman from Etsy Fort Worth contacted me and told me that she thought I would be a perfect fit for their upcoming holiday craft show, wanted to know if I would be interested, and told me where to apply. I have never been particularly interested in craft shows, but I thought that maybe I should give it a try, have some fun and maybe make some extra Christmas money. I filled out my application, sent in my entry fee, and then realized that I would have to wait and see if I got chosen. Of course I soon received an email telling me that they regretted to tell me that they had received more than expected applications and I just wasn’t a “fit” for the upcoming show. “What???? But you asked me!!!”

I had the same thing happen when we started business in 2008 and I applied to take part in Etsy Dallas’s Jingle Bell Dash craft show. I wasn’t an official member of Etsy Dallas, and I, for the first time, received the email about receiving too many applications…blah….blah….blah. It almost made me close my Etsy shop. I had told my mother, daughters and friends about applying; everyone was waiting for the results, and then I had to say I wasn’t chosen.

I have never been much of a joiner. I don’t like being turned down, and I have dropped out or organizations rather than vote on a person being accepted or not. One would probably say that the possibility of being turned down was known from the beginning, but I don’t think I have ever been in or asked to be in any group that considers themselves so talented or exclusive that new members or participants aren’t welcomed with open arms.

Right now I can look back at what I have written and think that feeling embarrassed is just childish, and that I knew when I started this that everyone wouldn’t like everything I do. Lord knows I should have outgrown all of this not just years, but decades ago.

It is very important to develop and keep up a good relationship with everyone concerned with one’s business, from suppliers to customers, and I know that this can’t be done if I let too many little things, such as being turned down for a craft show, make me pull back into my shell.

I have been writing and rewriting this first post in my head for days, probably several months by now. I’ve gone to all of my favorite blogs, found and read their first post, their “about me” column, all the things that they did to launch their incredible blogs. Me? I figure I will add on my “About Me” page or column when I finally figure out a way to make myself sound wonderfully and unforgettably interesting. Might be a bit of a wait.

I was reading a newsletter from Heather Allard, founder of The Mongul Mom, talking about Weekend Reading: Just Do It Edition. Heather had links to several blogs, but The Launch Coach caught my eye with the title “The Big Secret to Success? Run With What You Have”. They asked, “So what do you do if you are not 100% ready to roll? You roll with the 60% you have.”

That’s me….old 60%. In amount accomplished and almost in age. So I’m going with what I’ve got…. Soon I will figure out how to put in the logo for my other shop, Little Dixie Chicks
